Can You Get A Double Black Belt?

Often, parents and students ask me questions about how can one become a Black Belt in our martial arts program. And if there is a such a thing as “double black belt”. The conversation usually goes with questions like these:

“Can you get a double black belt in martial arts?”

No, there is no such thing as a "double black belt" in martial arts. A black belt is typically the highest rank attainable in a martial arts style, and having multiple black belts in different styles is possible but not referred to as a "double black belt".

“Does double black belt mean 2nd degree black belt?'“

No, "double black belt" is not a commonly used term in the martial arts community to refer to a 2nd degree black belt. The term "degree" is usually used to indicate the level of black belt, such as first degree, second degree, etc. The use of "double black belt" is not a widely recognized or standardized terminology.

“How long does it take to become 1st degree black belt?”

The time it takes to become a first degree black belt varies depending on the martial arts style, training frequency, and individual progress. On average, it can take anywhere from 3 to 5 years of consistent training to achieve a first degree black belt. However, the exact time frame can be shorter or longer depending on these factors and the specific requirements of the martial arts style being trained in.

“What do different degrees mean?”

In martial arts, different degrees refer to the level of achievement or mastery within a particular style or system. Each degree usually represents a higher level of skill, knowledge, and understanding of the techniques and principles of the style.

The number of degrees in a martial arts system can vary, with some styles having just one or two degrees (e.g. first degree and second degree black belts), while others have multiple degrees (e.g. first degree, second degree, third degree, etc.). The requirements for each degree also vary between styles, but they typically involve a combination of technical proficiency, teaching ability, and time in rank.

“What is the highest degree at International Karate & Self-Defense?”

We teach a version of the traditional ITF style of Taekwondo. In Taekwondo, the highest degree is typically a 9th degree black belt, which is the highest rank attainable. In general, reaching higher degrees in Taekwondo requires many years of consistent training, teaching, and contributions to the martial art. The process for earning higher degrees can also be more rigorous, involving additional testing, evaluations, and demonstrations of mastery. And so the highest degree one can earn with us the 9th degree black belt.
